The work towards my Masters of Arts degree consists of a triangular look at the effect the Media has on victims of serious crime.

In previous modules I have looked at the situation from the eyes of the victims themselves and the police through the role of family liaison officers.

With this dissertation I have turned to the Media themselves, whilst still interweaving my text with comments made by victims which have not already featured in previous research.

Initially I set out to establish the power of the Media through the words of victims, the Media themselves and literature. This gave me a firm ground on which to establish the vast amount of pressure placed on victims of major crime by the Media.

Following this I researched the attitude of the Media both towards victims and towards their own power and profession.

The research I have undertaken over the past two years is designed to give a rounded view of the relationship that exists between the Media and Victims. I believe that each section of my research stands on its own but also combines to give a full picture of the situation.

In this dissertation I go on to look at the guidelines that exist to regulate the behaviour of the Media and try to establish whether these are effective and how the Media behave where no guidelines exist.

Out of my research will come a number of active documents both for the police and Victim Support. I will outline this side of my research in Chapter Five.
