The Music Years - 1952

Below are just some of the top songs from the year in which I was born

The British pop charts were officially born on October 25th when I was just under one month old. They were a top 12 and it was compiled by the New Musical Express. At the time it was an advertising tool with the paper's advertising manager telephoning round 20 major record stores and aggregating their sales figures. As a result Here in My Heart by Al Martino stayed at number one from the first chart and stayed there for 18 weeks - well into the new year. In America the Billboard Charts had been going slightly longer and listed the following records as number ones in 1952.

DATE Weeks Song Artist
Dec 21st, 1951 11 Cry Johnnie Ray and the Four Lads
March 15th 9 Wheel of Fortune Kay Starr
May 17th 5 Blue Tango Leroy Anderson
June 21st 2 Here in My Heart Al Martino
July 5th 1 Delicado Percy Faith and his Orchestra
July 12th 9 Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart Vera Lynn
September 13th 5 You Belong to Me Jo Stafford
October 18th 6 I Went to Your Wedding Patti Page
November 22nd 1 It's In the Book Johnny Standley
November 29th 4 Why Don't You Believe Me Joni James
December 27th 2 I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus Jimmy Boyd

But the story doesn't stop there as pop historians have now pushed the British charts back some 13 years thanks to Radio Luxembourg who had a regular chart show with positions based on the sale of sheet music. As a result the number one on the day I was born turns out to be The Homing Waltz by Vera Lynn and Alma Cogan.
